Department: Policy and Public Affairs team within Strategy and Consumer Insight
Location: This role can be based in the Channel 4's London or Leeds offices.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional with a strong track record of delivering impactful political and stakeholder events, to join Channel 4 in a varied and fast-moving role at a uniquely important time for the channel. The External Affairs Manager will play a key part in developing and delivering a wide range of public affairs events and projects, successfully communicating Channel 4’s work and helping the channel to engage with a wide range of political, corporate and industry stakeholders across the UK.

The Policy & Public Affairs team is responsible for managing Channel 4’s relationships with the Government, Parliament, regulators and other stakeholders in the political and corporate worlds. It seeks to ensure that Channel 4 can deliver its public service remit and purpose in the most favourable possible stakeholder, policy and regulatory environment. The team plays a lead role in building third party awareness and support amongst stakeholders and ensuring that stakeholders are kept informed about key Channel 4 programmes and initiatives and understand Channel 4’s unique remit and model.


To work as part of the wider Policy & Public Affairs team, devising and delivering an engaging and innovative package of public affairs events and activity that promotes greater understanding of Channel 4’s unique public service remit and role amongst key stakeholders.

The role will work closely with departments across Channel 4, including Corporate Communications, Press, Nations & Regions, Commissioning and Film4 to identify opportunities for impactful stakeholder engagement through a wide range of events and visits.

You will need to be a self-starter and hands-on, with significant experience in delivering creative and engaging events and in thinking of innovative ways of reaching stakeholders.

You’ll be well-connected in Westminster and Whitehall and able to build and maintain great relationships.

  • Support the development and delivery of an effective stakeholder engagement programme utilising a range of events, visits and meetings to highlight key strands of Channel 4’s role and delivery against its public purpose.
  • Lead on the delivery of compelling external events across UK wide locations, including sourcing venues, maintaining budgets, managing contact databases and building relationships with third party suppliers.
  • Proactively identify creative opportunities for political engagement around key Channel 4 programmes and themes.
  • Build personal stakeholder relationships and support stakeholder relationship building for the Policy & Public Affairs team and C4 leadership.
  • Ensure effective information flow and coordination between teams and across C4 locations.
  • Identify and map out key stakeholders on a range of issues and help to broaden and deepen the team’s relationships with decision makers and other key stakeholder groups.
  • Represent and advocate for Channel 4 to external stakeholders.

Technical & Professional Skills
  • A sound understanding of Westminster and the current political landscape, gained through previous public affairs agency, in-house or Parliamentary experience.
  • Proven experience of events management; with enthusiasm, creativity, idea generation and practical event organisation.
  • An excellent project manager with the experience in logistical planning, managing budgets and a complex stakeholder database. Familiar with agile project methodology. Good attention to detail.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills, including project management, logistical planning, managing databases and writing briefs.
  • Proven ability to develop excellent relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Autonomy/Judgement/Decision Making
  • Ability to prioritise and juggle busy, dynamic workloads.
  • Excellent political judgement.
  • Rigorous attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel in the UK when needed.
Relationship Management
  • The ability to advocate for C4 and deal comfortably with a wide range of stakeholders to develop strong external relationships and build networks.
  • Confidence to build relationships with senior colleagues.
Business Impact/Strategic Perspective
  • An enthusiasm and passion for C4’s vision, remit and strategic direction.
  • Able to develop a broad knowledge of C4’s policy and business objectives in order to understand the messages and objectives behind stakeholder engagement.
  • Knowledge of the broadcasting sector
  • Experience of working with the Devolved administrations across the UK
  • Experience of delivering impactful Party Conference events
